Background

As part of the starting a new journey, I had to reconfigure my personal laptop. Everything had to start from scratch — from the ISO image, to system installation, to configuration, to being fully functional. It wasn’t as easy as it seemed.

Especially when I realized that, even for some of the most common tools, I had to learn and install from scratch (or maybe I just hadn’t paid enough attention before).

Introducing My Kitty - Xiaojiu

Who is he

Name: Xiaojiu

Birth: February 2022

Gender: Male

Personality: Lazy, sometimes gentle, sometimes grumpy, not very talkative

When the story started

It was a stray cat. On March 3, 2022, just one month old, it crawled into my car. From then on, it officially became a member of our family.

Its name comes from this special day—March 3rd. Unconsciously, it reminded me of “San San De Jiu (三三得九)” from the Chinese multiplication table《九九乘法表》.

Intro

WSL: Windows Subsystem for Linux

WSL is a tiny Linux VM embedded in Windows, default is Ubuntu.

Issue: wsl --install is very slow, mainly because Microsoft’s overseas servers have poor bandwidth in China. Fastest solution: Offline manual install (domestic mirror download), done in a few minutes.

Prerequisites

Windows 11 Home fully supports WSL2, no Hyper-V required. Just enable two system features, install the MSI you downloaded, and import the wsl image - works fully offline.
